In 2024, the Abergele Rotary Club proudly took up the mantle of organizing the much-loved Santa Float, a cherished tradition that brings joy to the heart of our community. With its twinkling lights, festive music, and Santa’s warm wave, the float has long been a symbol of the holiday spirit in Abergele. However, this year’s journey came with unforeseen challenges that tested our resolve and creativity.
In previous years, the success of the Santa Float relied heavily on the incredible support of Abergele’s sports and social clubs. Their enthusiastic volunteers always stepped forward to assist with the vital collections that accompany the float, helping us spread holiday cheer while raising funds for important local causes. This year, however, the landscape shifted dramatically. Events beyond our control left us grappling with a significant shortage of collectors, a hurdle that ultimately forced us to scale back the number of routes.
Santa Float
As we worked tirelessly to adapt, a major hurdle emerged: finding a suitable vehicle to tow the Santa Float. At nearly 1.5 tons, the float is an impressive sight, but its size and weight demand a powerful and reliable vehicle. Despite extensive efforts and outreach within the community, securing such a vehicle proved to be a significant challenge. It was a frustrating and humbling experience, but one that underscored the complexities of bringing a large-scale community project to life.
Flu season hit our community hard, side-lining many of our would-be volunteers at a critical time. Injuries added to the challenge, and then, as if on cue, Mother Nature unleashed her fury. Storm Darah swept through with ferocious winds and heavy rain, further complicating our efforts to gather a strong team of collectors. Each setback was a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of resilience in the face of adversity.
While these obstacles meant we couldn’t bring the Santa Float to as many neighbourhoods as we had hoped, our commitment to the spirit of the season never wavered. We focused on delivering an unforgettable experience along the routes we could manage, ensuring that the magic of the Santa accompanying the collectors continued to light up the faces of children and adults alike.
Rotary provided a vehicle suitably decorated with sparkling lights, and the music that brings a festive smile to the faces of inhabitants of Abergele. The joy and excitement we witnessed along the way reminded us why we do this work and renewed our determination to overcome the hurdles for next year.
Reflecting on the Santa Float 2024
As we reflect on 2024, we are incredibly grateful for the unwavering support of those who stood by us. To the volunteers who braved the elements, the community members who offered their encouragement, and everyone who contributed in any way—thank you. Your spirit of togetherness and generosity is what makes Abergele such a special place.

We’ve learned valuable lessons this year, and we’re already exploring ways to ensure a smoother and more expansive Santa Float journey in 2025.
